What Exactly are DPC Points?

DPC, Dota Professional Circuit, is a professional tournament format system of the Dota game. The circuit was developed by Valve in 2017 as a continuation of the series in its venture to keep things interesting for players just like you. The key to earning prizes for teams is to accumulate as many DPC Points as possible and to accumulate these points, an understanding of how they work is vital. Below are the basics you need to know, starting from tours to regional leagues and the majors.

Tours

A DPC tournament consists of 3 tours that run throughout the year. What do we mean by tours, and how are they relevant to earning you DPC points? These tours (Winter, Spring and Summer) offer a convenient way to accumulate the much-needed DPC points. Through these DPC tournaments, teams fight to secure an invitation to the ultimate Dota tournament known as The International. If you are serious about your Dota gaming journey, The International is where you want to be. Each DPC tour consists of one regional league and one major tournament that offers a specific pathway to The International by accumulating DPC Points.

Regional Leagues

Regional leagues represent a round-robin tournament that offers the chance to top teams to participate in the majors. They are competitive like any other league with the prospects of promotion and the daunting reality of demolition should your team not do so well. You will be divided into six regional leagues based on your physical location – North America, South America, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China and Southeast Asia.

Each regional league is divided into two divisions. Division 1 is for the higher-skilled teams, while Division 2 is for players with a lower skill set. The prospect of being stuck in Division 2 may suck, but you don’t have to worry as there is a chance to move up divisions if you perform well.

The honors of getting much needed DPC points fall on the respective teams simply by ensuring a top 5 finish in their regional Division 1 league as outlined below:

  • 1st place – 300/400/500 DPC Points;
  • 2nd place -180/240/ 300 DPC Points;
  • 3rd place – 120/160/200 DPC Points;
  • 4th place – 60/80/100 DPC Points;
  • 5th place – 30/40/50 DPC Points.

If your team is still in Division 2, there is no need to get discouraged. Rather, strive to do better to earn a promotion to Division 1 where you have the potential to win the valuable DPC Points.

The Majors

Competing with different teams from your region is no mean feat. But after you’ve made it through the challenging regional leagues, there’s a final hurdle for you to make it to The International. Cumulatively, the best performing 18 teams across the various regions’ Division 1 make it to The Majors, the next stage of the battle.

The Majors take the competition to a new level by offering a knockout-style contest. So, on top of relishing the enthralling and nail-biting bit of the tournament, you stand a chance of winning prizes, and more importantly, vital DPC points that take you to The International. If you manage to edge out your competition and secure a top 8 finish, you get to win several DPC points and prizes. Here’s a breakdown of the DPC points you stand to win in The Majors:

  • 1st place: 400/500/ 600 DPC Points;
  • 2nd place: 350/450/550 DPC Points;
  • 3rd place: 300/400/500 DPC Points;
  • 4th place: 250/350/450 DPC Points;
  • 5th place: 200/300/400 DPC Points;
  • 6th place: 200/300/400 DPC Points;
  • 7th place: 100/200/300 DPC Points;
  • 8th place: 100/200/300 DPC Points.

The International

This is the final stage of your Dota gaming journey. You’ve made it through the tough competition and finished among the 12 best teams in The Majors. You deserve your chance to compete with the best as you’ve earned it. The International offers you the opportunity to win the top prizes you had primarily targeted when you started playing.

Cold Hard Cash on the Line

On top of garnering DPC Points when you play Dota 2, there are usually real money prize pools in the tournaments. Competitions in Tours, Regional Leagues, and The Majors often have prize pools worth anything from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. And when you get to The International tournaments, prize pools usually range in the tens of millions of dollars. For instance, The International 10, which took place from June to October 2021 in Bucharest, Romania, had a prize pool of over $40 million!
